REPORT A FOUND POCKET PET

If you've encountered a small animal outside and suspect it might be a lost pocket pet, read below to determine your next steps.

HELP! I THINK I FOUND A POCKET PET OUTSIDE!

First, try to determine if this animal is, in fact, a lost pocket pet and not a wild animal. There are many animals native to Minnesota that are similar to pocket pets, such as flying squirrels, cottontail rabbits, fishers, deer mice, and more.

WILD VS DOMESTIC

If you've found a wild animal that needs help, contact Wildlife Rehabilitation and Release or MN Wildlife Rehab Center.

Never attempt to capture or otherwise restrain any wild animal.

You can view a list with links to images on the MN DNR web page here.

CAPTURING A LOOSE POCKET PET

If you are able and it is safe, gently coax the animal into a secure box with air holes or a sturdy pet carrier. You can use a small amount of food to entice the animal, encouraging it to approach you or move into the box or carrier. This will help ensure their safety while you assist them.

If you would like MNPPR to take custody of the animal, please send an email with a photo to our Recovery Team Manager, Asher, at asher@mnpocketpetrescue.org.
