Welcome to the first post on Minnesota's Pocket Pet Rescue blog!
THE WHO: This blog is run by Minnesota's only rescue dedicated specifically to the smallest of our fuzzy family members often grouped together as pocket pets.
THE WHAT: Pocket pets are a group of mammals (and one marsupial) that have been bred and domesticated to be pets. Some of these little guys and gals are quite common and can be found at the local pet store (like hamsters and guinea pigs) while others are more rare and may be considered banned exotics depending on the state you live in. They all are captive bred animals that have been domesticated for companionship with people, just like cats and dogs.
THE WHY: Why rescue animals some people are grossed out or confused about? Because these furry little guys can hold a surprising amount of love and intelligence. While they may be skittish at first, since most of them are prey animals in the wild, once they are comfortable and feel safe they can be playful, social, cuddly, and downright entertaining. There is a lot of misunderstandings and misinformation circling around out there and this blog (as well as the rescue itself) is working to help more people understand what pocket pets are, how to take care of them, and why we believe they are so awesome!
